    Welcome to Hot Springs
Hot Springs is traditionally best known for the natural spring water that gives it its name, flowing out of the ground at a very high 147 degrees Fahrenheit (64 degrees Celsius). The tourist trade that this brought made it a very successful spa town. However, it is now also noted as the boyhood home of US President Bill Clinton. It is the home of the Arlington Hotel, which was a popular retreat for Al Capone. (Information provided by Wikipedia.)(Information provided by Wikipedia .)

A flood warning information system was unveiled today, July 22 at Whittington City Park in Hot Springs.  The flood warning information system is the first in Arkansas to use satellite data transmissions from multiple U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) gauges.

The flood warning information system includes four gauges where streamflow (water volume per second), stage (water level), and rainfall are monitored, and two additional locations where rainfall only is monitored.   All six monitoring sites transmit information hourly via satellite to a publicly accessible USGS webpage. When rainfall rates exceed 0.3 inch per 15 minutes or 2 inches per hour, or when stages rise by 4 feet, an alarm is triggered in the data recorder which then initiates a series of phone calls to select personnel at USGS, City of Hot Springs and National Weather Service (NWS).  After verification that a flood event is imminent, NWS and the City of Hot Springs will issue an appropriate warning to residents.  The system is funded by the City of Hot Springs and USGS.  The equipment gathering the data will be operated by USGS.

    MPO LAUNCHES “HOT SPRINGS RIDESHARE”

In response to growing citizen interest in ways to save at the gas pump, the Hot Springs Metropolitan Planning Organization (HSA-MPO) will kick off the new “Hot Springs Rideshare” citizen carpooling program on Saturday, July 26 at the Historic Downtown Farmers’ Market in the Transportation Plaza near Broadway and Orange.

At the Rideshare booth, which will operate from 8 to 11 a.m., citizens can pick up an application, instructions and tips for successful carpooling, and promotional items.  MPO Study Director Dianne Morrison will be on hand to answer questions.

“The MPO can help match interested carpoolers with others that have similar needs,” Morrison explained.  “The applicant’s information is entered into a computer, which will then produce a match report listing other applicants that may be contacted to discuss mutually agreeable carpool arrangements.”
